Questions to ask your partner to feel closer

Published 1 Nov 2026 · 3 min read

You can know someone for years and still be surprised by them. Often all it takes is a question you've never thought to ask.

Below are questions grouped from light to deep. You don't need to get through them all. One good question, really listened to, can carry a whole evening.

How to ask so it doesn't feel like an interview

  • Take turns. Answer each question yourself too. It's a conversation, not a test.
  • Follow the interesting answer. If one answer opens a door, walk through it and forget the list.
  • Start light. Deep questions land better once you're both relaxed and laughing.
  • Let them pass. Anyone can skip a question, no explanation needed. Feeling safe is what makes the next answer honest.
  • Listen more than you plan. The best follow-up is usually "What was that like?"

Light and playful

  • What's a small thing that always improves your day?
  • Which song would you choose to walk into a room to?
  • What food could you eat every week and never get bored of?
  • If we had a free Saturday with no plans and no budget, what would we do?
  • What's something you're secretly very good at?
  • Which film or series could you watch again tonight?
  • What's the most useless talent you have?
  • Would you rather wake up early to watch the sunrise, or stay up late to watch the stars?

Getting to know you

  • What were you like at ten years old?
  • Who taught you the most about how to treat people?
  • What's a smell or a sound that takes you straight back to childhood?
  • What's something you changed your mind about in the last few years?
  • What do people usually get wrong about you at first?
  • When do you feel most like yourself?
  • What's a compliment you've never forgotten?

A little deeper

  • What are you proud of that you rarely talk about?
  • What's something you're still learning to forgive yourself for?
  • When you're stressed, what helps, and what makes it worse?
  • What does a good life look like to you, in one ordinary day?
  • Is there something you wish people asked you about more?
  • What's a fear you've grown out of, and one you haven't yet?

About the two of us

  • When did you first feel comfortable with me?
  • What's a moment with me that you think about more than I'd guess?
  • What do I do that makes you feel loved, even if it's small?
  • Is there something I could do more of?
  • What's one of our inside jokes you hope we never stop making?
  • What do you think we're good at, as a pair?

Looking ahead

  • Where would you love us to travel, and why there?
  • What's something you want to learn in the next year?
  • What tradition would you like us to start?
  • What makes a place feel like home to you?
  • What's one thing you hope we're still doing in ten years?

Make a game of it

If you'd like someone else to do the asking, our games for two are built for exactly this. You each play on your own phone, wherever you both are. You answer privately, and the answers are revealed together, so nobody can copy. There are games for every stage, from talking stage and getting to know you to deep talk, and the questions are dealt by our server, so nobody can peek ahead.
